One of my favorite songs by Ed Sheeran. The mallets are so iconic in the beginning for a song that, yes, is pop, but it also works as a rock song in a way. The way the melody always continues and flows is amazing, especially when paired with the remarkable dancing in the music video, which is an excellent music video. They keep adding these little things that you fall in love with, one intimate layer at a time, which alone feels like falling in love. Then he’s talking about the shape of his lover and enticing without being overtly profane. There’s something about the whole song that just reminisces that intimate attraction, love, and lust all piled up into a pop song. Ed Sheeran has a lot, but this could easily be considered his best.
What’s amazing when watching him live, is that you think he couldn’t match the production value of his pop records in a stadium, but the thing is he builds the songs live with the loop pedal. The way that he builds it live is just the same way, adding layers at just the right time to build to a climax and he always leaves a song short wanting you more. The thing is, this song’s recorded version makes you wanting more at almost 4 minutes. I still can’t decide if this song leans more love or lust.
